JDBC Interface
Empress
introduces a new JDBC Interface to its powerful collection of database application development tools. The Empress JDBC Interface allows Web server developers and GUI developers to take advantage of a host of tools and capabilities to display, retrieve and format information residing on Empress databases.
For Internet and intranet application development, Web programmers can easily
create Java technology-based Web servlets and CGI programs to manage Empress
databases. The persistence of a Java servlet makes it an efficient programming
option; once started, it stays in memory and fulfills multiple requests without
repeated programming.
GUI developers can take advantage of the range of capabilities offered by
Java's Abstract Windowing Toolkit (AWT) , a component of the Java Developer Kit.
Sun's freely distributed, platform independent AWT is a highly- effective
applet and graphical application development environment. AWT allows a
developer to create buttons, menus, scrollbars, dialog boxes and even entire
GUI applications to display information residing in Empress databases.
The Empress JDBC Interface is an optional component of Empress RDBMS V8.10 and is available on select platforms.

SMI Speeds Up Data Delivery
The
growing presence of JavaTM based technology
in the IT field is not surprising to anyone in the industry. The benefits
Java offers are numerous. For example, Java servlets are gaining widespread
use because of their persistent nature. This makes them faster by eliminating
the wasted time incurred by repeatedly creating and tearing down the same,
frequently-executed programs.
The Swiss Meteorological Institutes (SMI) has taken advantage of such Java
platform capabilities. SMI uses Empress products such as Empress RDBMS, the
Empress ODBC Interface and the new Empress JDBC Interface to operate a system
which manages all types of weather data. The application runs mainly on
Solaris 2.5x on Sun Ultra workstations and Sun Enterprise Servers.
The decision to use the Empress JDBC Driver by SMI was based on their
application's need for speed. When SMI realized that the former JDBC-ODBC
bridge product they were using could not handle the large volume of text,
graphical and symbol series data that they processed every day, they knew
they needed another alternative. Pleased with their past success with Empress,
they looked to one of Empress's newest products: the Empress JDBC Interface.
